When lanes are to be added to existing Interstate bridges, bridge width shall be determined as follows:
Where lane is added on median side, entire median shall be bridged and concrete median barrier placed on or near centerline of median. Barrier shall be provided on approach slabs with appropriate connection to double face guardrail or continuation of barrier shape. Guardrail or barrier determination off ends of bridge shall be made by road designer.
Mainline bridge shall be widened to provide extra lane plus 3.6m (12 feet) shoulder on the median side.
