Visitation to the Dredged Material Containment Areas

  1. General

    This policy defines the Department’s position on visitation to the dredged material containment areas by the general public.

  2. Policy

    The Department owns numerous acres of land in Jasper County, South Carolina, which includes a total of approximately 5,800 acres of dredged material containment area (DMCAs) for the Savannah Harbor. The Department also owns Andrews Island, the DMCA in the Brunswick Harbor.

    The Department limits visitation to the DMCAs to the government employees and contractors having business pertinent to the use and maintenance of the DMCAs. The general public is not allowed to visit the DMCAs. The following activities are specifically prohibited:

    1. Hunting of game and/or fowl (except for pest control purposes as approved by the Department and the Corps of Engineers)
    2. Fishing
    3. Hunting of fossils, rocks, shells, etc.
    4. Bird watching/photography (except as approved by the Department and the Corps of Engineers)
    5. Operation of motorcycles, operation of all-terrain vehicles, recreation activities, picnicking, exercising, dog walking, fireworks.

    No person or group is allowed in the DMCAs without approval by the Department and the Corps of Engineers. The Department will not approve visitation to the DMCAs for the above listed purposed, except as noted.

    This policy is limited to DOT owned property. Persons owning property adjacent to DOT must confine their activities to their property. Adjacent property owners desiring to use DOT property to access their property must submit a request (Administrator, Office of Intermodal Programs, 276 Memorial Drive, SW, Atlanta, GA 30303) in writing for a key to the gate. A key will be provided along with a list of conditions that must be adhered to by the user of the key. The keys will be provided to adjacent property owners only. Any person found on DOT property not in accordance with the conditions for use of a key will be considered to be trespassing and subject to criminal prosecution.
