There has been some discussion recently of procedures for permitting of maintenance vehicles carrying oversized loads. Each District should have an annual permit from the Office of Permits and Enforcement for the operation of their lowboys. In cases where the load exceeds the annual permit limitation, a single trip permit should be obtained.
You should insure that Department vehicles comply with permit stipulations contained in the "Georgia Code of Public Transportation", Section 95A-953 through 95A-963 and the "Rules of State Department of Transportation", Chapter 672-2, "Permits for Vehicles or Loads of Excess Weight or Dimension." (copy attached).
Not only should we have permits for oversized loads but we should insure that the required signing and marking of oversized loads is adhered to.
