About These Pages
Thanks for the opportunity to create this site goes to Dr. John D. Leonard of Georgia Tech.
Additional thanks for the inspiration to create this site goes to Dr. Roger A. McCain of Drexel University.
These pages were created by Jack Burnside in 1996 while he was studying at Georgia Tech. He has donated the pages to the Georgia DOT so that they can have a permanent home. He maintains the copyright to all of his photos. Jack can be reached via e-mail. Many of the DOT's pictures were taken using a digital camera and are available at higher resolution for printing or wallpaper. Those files can be sent on request, so please feel free to ask.
Much of the information for these pages is based upon the book "Covered Bridges of Georgia" by Thomas L. French, Jr. & Edward L. French, ©1984
(Publisher's address: Frenco Company, 820 Broadway, Columbus, GA 31901) and is used with permission.
The Frenchs have been consulted by Tom Lenard of Auburn University for the production of a biography on noted bridge builder Horace King. The title of the hour long program is "Horace: The Bridge Builder King." It is expected to run on PBS.
About three quarters of the pictures on the site have been added since the site was moved to the DOT, coming from a variety of sources internally and from the public. Rockdale, George Smith, and Callaway Gardens bridges as well as the graveyard of fallen bridges have also been added. Additional pages were donated that relate to the Auchumpkee, Watson Mill, and Rockdale bridges. Informational pages have been included on construction and history of covered bridges and the number of bridges in Georgia.
