The Sidney Lanier Bridge

Rendering of New Bridge

A new cable-stayed bridge is being built to replace the existing Sidney Lanier Bridge in Brunswick, Georgia. Named after the author of The Marshes of Glynn, the new bridge will be the longest spanning bridge in the state and allow larger ships to enter the port of Brunswick. Complicating the design and construction were a number of environmental considerations that had to be addressed.

January 2000

This page was written to explain the construction of such a large project. Construction of the bridge was broken into three contracts as follow:

  1. Approach Spans
  2. Main Span
  3. Removal of Old Bridge

If you have questions about the bridge, please refer to the FAQ. Thanks for your interest in this project!
