Perimeter Center Parkway and I-285 Overpass Construction
DeKalb County
Update
Georgia DOT will be
conducting peroidic controlled blasting on the north side of Interstate 285 near
Perimeter Center Parkway. The
blasting process will require a brief pacing of traffic in westbound and eastbound lanes on I-285.
Project Overview
The Perimeter Center Parkway Overpass will be a four-lane divided roadway across Interstate 285 from Hammond Drive to Lake Hearn Drive. A component of the Governor’s Fast Forward Program, this project will significantly improve mobility in the Perimeter Center district. Once completed this roadway will ease traffic congestion for commuters by providing a north/south alternative to heavily-traveled Ashford Dunwoody and Peachtree Dunwoody roads. It also will facilitate easier access to MARTA’s Perimeter Center Station at the intersection of Hammond Drive and Perimeter Center Parkway.
The project also includes the following upgrades:
- Intersection redesign (Hammond Drive & Perimeter Center Parkway) for pedestrian crossing and signal efficiency.
- Medians.
- Four-foot bicycle lanes in each direction.
- Six-foot sidewalks in each direction.
- Pedestrian and street lighting.
- The bridge construction will accommodate future area improvements and
widening of I-285.
Project Time Frame
Georgia DOT began construction on the Perimeter Center Parkway / I-285 Overpass in spring 2005. This project is scheduled for completion in late spring 2007.
Impact on Travel
Traffic delays are to be expected. Please allow additional travel time and/or choose alternate routes during this project. No work will be performed during major holidays or in inclement weather.
- During the construction, Perimeter Center Parkway will be re-routed; motorists should pay attention to any detours and/or new lane striping
between Hammond Drive towards I-285.
- New bridge support installation work will require some lane closures on I-285. This work is scheduled to begin in the early fall of 2005.
Safety
The Georgia DOT is dedicated to providing safe conditions for both motorists and workers. As with any construction project, motorists should slowdown, be alert and pay special attention to all work zone signs, pavement markings and traffic control devices. The Georgia DOT urges all drivers to use care when traveling through areas where crews are working, not just for the safety of our workers but for the safety of the motorists.
