Overview
In early March 2006, the Georgia Department of Transportation begin work on the Peachtree Road construction project. This project is part of the Governor’s Fast Forward Program and is designed to move traffic more efficiently and enhance pedestrian safety with a beautifully landscaped raised median and widened sidewalks lined with junipers and willows.
The project is the result of a collaboration between the Georgia DOT, Buckhead CID and Buckhead Coalition .
The scheduled completion date of the first of three project phases is late summer 2007.
Project Scope
The project is limited to the area on Peachtree Street (State Route 141) between Shadowlawn and Roxboro roads. The construction work will be done in three phases. The first phase will include work along Peachtree Road between Maple Drive and the Georgia 400 bridge. The second phase of the project, from GA 400 to Roxboro/Peachtree Dunwoody Road, is scheduled to begin as Phase 1 is completed.
Construction Work/Upgrades
- Construction will include the redesign of pedestrian crossings, improved signal timing, new landscaped medians, sidewalks, and new bike lanes.
- Aesthetic upgrades include utility relocation, enhanced MARTA bus and train stops and new, easy-to-read street signage.
- Environmental upgrades include newly redesigned sidewalks that will be up to 10’ wide in some areas and include new handicap ramps, granite curbing, concrete and granite pavers and landscaped areas. Public benches and decorative trash receptacles will be added. The raised medians with turn lanes will feature a unique irrigation system.
- Some trees will be transplanted; and Georgia DOT will replant about 75 trees.

- On Saturday lane closures can occur during the day however, there will be no lane closures on Friday and Saturday nights.
- On Sunday, crews may close lanes from 9:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
- There will be no lane closures from November 15 until January 7.

Motorist Safety
The Georgia DOT is dedicated to providing safe conditions for both motorists and workers on our roadways. As with any construction project, motorists should slowdown, be alert and pay special attention to all work zone signs, pavement markings and traffic control devices. Motorists are also urged to avoid unnecessary lane changes; allow extra distance between themselves and the vehicle ahead; and to exercise extreme caution while driving through these work zones.
