Major Construction Projects Traffic Conditions

Fairburn Road @ I-20
Douglas County

Back to interstates construction page.

Overview

Just under 1 mile of roadway reconstruction, Intersection Improvements including installation of video detection systems and construction of a new bridge over I-20.

Total cost for this project is $26,781,000

Scope of Work

The new bridge will be approximately 100‘longer than the existing bridge at 439’and 140’ wide as opposed to its current approx 58+’ of width. The elevation of the north end of the new bridge will be 8’ higher than the old, while the south end will be 6’ higher.

Limited access (no curb cuts) on either side of the new bridge. This will improve traffic flow by limiting the movements of traffic in the area of the ramp interchanges. Cherokee Blvd will be realigned to T up its intersection with that of South Cherokee Blvd on either side of the SR.

    1. Demolish the old bridge and build the new along with the new approaches on SR 92. There will be no dedicated turn lanes onto the I-20 ramps during this stage. This will be the longest stage.
  • Stage 5 (approximated at 4 to 6 months)
    1. Open new bridge and demolish the Detour bridge
    2. the beginning of the most painful part, maintain 3 lanes of traffic through the project in the existing NB lanes. 1 lane in each direction with a center turn lane.
    3. Construct the SB side of SR 92 outside of the bridge approaches.

As with any construction project, motorists should slowdown, be alert and pay special attention to all work zone signs, pavement markings and traffic control devices. Motorists are also urged to avoid unnecessary lane changes; allow extra distance between themselves and the vehicle ahead; and to exercise extreme caution while driving through these work zones.
