Interstate 75/Interstate 575
High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Lanes

The I-75/I-575 HOV project, also known as the Northwest Corridor Project, is an innovative project utilizing the resources of GDOT and the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA). The two agencies have joined together to create a unique project that proposes a system-level approach, blending transit, high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes and truck-only lanes, to effectively manage and meet the growing travel demands of the corridor.

The project currently under study includes the extension of HOV lanes and truck-only lanes on I-75 north from Akers Mill Road to north of Hickory Grove Road, construction of new HOV ramps and interchanges for access to the system, and implementation of express bus or bus rapid transit (BRT) services supported by transit stations, park-and-ride lots, and various bus priority improvements. Additionally, HOV lanes are also proposed on I-575 from the I-75/I-575 Interchange to Sixes Road in Cherokee County. The alternatives under consideration also include options for tolling the HOV and truck-only lanes. The project is currently in the Preliminary Engineering phase.

The Northwest Corridor is a key element in meeting the Department’s goals of providing transportation choices, improving mobility and reducing congestion. The project is the Department’s highest priority and is included in the Governor’s Fast Forward Program.

A Public-Private Initiative PPI has been submitted on this project. The PPI approach proposes to accelerate the project’s delivery, saving both time and money over the traditional transportation project development process.
