The LOI contains exhibits outlining the project description, the proposed schedule and terms of the project. Approving the letter allows GDOT and GTP to begin discussing the details of adding managed lanes on I-75 from Akers Mill Road to Hickory Grove Road and on I-575 from the I-575/I-75 interchange to Sixes Road in Cobb County. In addition, a Bus Rapid Transit system (BRT) is proposed along the I-75 corridor from Cobb County to Downtown Atlanta. The proposal submitted by GTP also includes adding barrier separated truck-only lanes (TOLs) which should further reduce congestion and improve roadway safety.
“PPI will help fill some of the funding void that the department is currently facing,” said State Transportation Board Chairman David Doss.
The PPI advisory committee will negotiate the final contract for the public private initiative, which will include the framework for other agreements with respect to the design process, project development and construction. The finalized contract for the public private initiative will be recommended to the Commissioner and the Governor. All existing general purpose lanes will remain free in accordance with the State Transportation Board -policies regardless of the finalized options to the Northwest Corridor.
Chairman Doss also added, “This is an exciting time and we are glad this historic day is here in the state of Georgia”.
The Northwest Corridor project will be Georgia’s first Public Private Initiative. PPI provides the state with funding alternatives for transportation projects and shortens the completion time of construction so that residents may take advantage of the benefits earlier and at minimum cost to the state.
