Public Information Meeting On I-75/575 Corridor Improvements

ATLANTA, November 10, 2005 --The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), Federal Transit Administration (FTA), and the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA) will hold a public information open house to present the current concept/environmental studies on the Northwest Corridor (I-75/I-575) project in Fulton, Cobb, and Cherokee Counties and discuss the associated impacts. The meeting will be held at the Cobb County Civic Center at 548 S. Marietta Parkway in Marietta on Tuesday, November 15, from 5:00 pm to 8:00pm.

The Northwest Corridor Project currently proposes to construct High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes and Truck Only Lanes (TOL) along I-75 between Akers Mill Rd and Hickory Grove Road; HOV lanes on I-575 from the I-75/I-575 Interchange to Sixes Road in Cherokee County; a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system along the I-75 corridor from Cobb County to Downtown Atlanta with BRT stations between the Cumberland and Town Center areas. In addition, various tolling options of the new managed lanes (HOV and TOL) will be explored, as a result of public input, and also as an emerging trend nationwide that uses pricing as a way to manage the lanes.

“This public information open house will present updates and changes in the environmental document so far and accept comments on the new alternatives under consideration,” said GDOT Commissioner Harold Linnenkohl. “We are excited about the public’s response and participation so far. We have listened and changes have been made as a result of these public comments. We will continue to value and encourage public involvement as we move through the many phases of this project.”

Public-Private partnerships, a relatively new concept of transportation project delivery and financing, will be discussed at the meeting. Since there is a Public Private Initiative (PPI) proposal that overlaps with the project, information will be provided to allow the public to view the proposal offered by the Georgia Transportation Partners.

There will not be a formal presentation at this public information open house, but project representatives will address individual comments and concerns. Study area maps, displays and a continuous video presentation on the project will be available. A court reporter will record individual comments during the open house. Written statements will be accepted until November 29, 2005 and may be mailed to Mr. Harvey D. Keepler, State Environmental/Location Engineer, Georgia Department of Transportation, Office of Environment/Location, 3993 Aviation Circle, Atlanta, GA 30336
