Office of Road Design
Office Mission

In support of the above Mission, the Office of Road Design is committed to providing quality engineering and design services, to the delivery of projects on schedule and within budget, and to providing professional customer service to our internal and external customers.

Quality Engineering and Design Services:
We are committed to the application of established design policies, guidelines, and processes developed and published by the Georgia Department of Transportation, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the National Highway Institute (NHI), the Transportation Research Board (TRB), and the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP). We are committed to recruiting qualified engineers and supporting the professional development of those engineers, including providing fundamental training in the disciplines of Highway Capacity and Traffic Studies, Geometric Design of Roadways, Highway Hydraulics and Hydrology, and Pavement Design. We are committed to practicing constant Quality Control and Quality Assurance of our engineering, design, plans and cost estimates, and to practicing professional engineering according to the following “Code of Ethics of Engineers” published by the American Society of Civil Engineers:

  • Engineers shall hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the public in the performance of their professional duties.
  • Engineers shall perform services only in the areas of their competence.
  • Engineers shall issue public statements only in an objective and truthful manner.
  • Engineers shall act in professional matters as faithful agents or trustees, and shall avoid conflicts of interest.
  • Engineers shall build their professional reputation on the merit of their services and shall not compete unfairly with others.
  • Engineers shall act in such a manner as to uphold and enhance the honor, integrity and dignity of the profession.
  • Engineers shall continue their professional development throughout their careers and shall provide opportunities for the professional development of those engineers under their supervision.

Delivery of Projects on Schedule and within Budget:
We are committed to providing aggressive and comprehensive Project Management, including close coordination with the Director of Preconstruction and Chief Engineer to establish accurate and achievable project schedules that are consistent with the Construction Work Program (CWP) and the State Transportation Improvement Plan (STIP). We are committed to developing accurate man-hour estimates and identifying human-resource-plans and/or consultant-acquisition-plans required to deliver projects on schedule. We are committed to providing constant communication with project team members to establish the scope of work, assign deadlines, monitor progress, identify potential delays and, if necessary, develop action-plans to resolve delays. We are committed to coordinating, developing, and monitoring accurate preliminary-engineering cost estimates, right-of-way cost estimates, utility cost estimates, and construction cost estimates, and updating these cost estimates at specific milestones during project development.

Professional Customer Service to our Internal and External Customers:
We are committed to providing professional customer service to both internal and external customers, including GDOT staff, consultant engineering firms, highway contractors, city and county governments, state-elected officials, state agencies, our federal partners, and the citizens of the State of Georgia. We are committed to providing constant communication with local governments and stake-holders to identify and address their needs and to report the progress of project development. We are committed to responding to all telephone calls, letters, emails, and other communications from our customers in an objective and truthful manner and in a timely and professionally documented manner.
