Highway System Status Maps

Primary System Map Series

Georgia's primary system is made up of two sets of roads:

  1. the Federal-aid primary system identified as of June 1, 1991; or
  2. any highway that is on the currently designated National Highway System.

Because of this two-part definition, please find two maps series showing these systems. If a road is highlighted on either map series, that road is on the state's primary system.

  • Georgia's Federal-aid Primary System as of June 1, 1991:
Note: both map series include large-scale maps to assist in viewing the primary system in the state's metropolitan areas.

Highway Functional Classification

The Highway Functional Classification map series is divided into three categories:

  1. Rural – County
  2. Small Urban Area are classified as areas of population density between 5,000 and 50,000.
  3. Urbanized Area have a population density of 50,000 and greater.

State Highway and Interstate Route System

Have you ever wonder what are the state route numbers for the interstates in Georgia or vice versa?
We would like to introduce you to an updated map that include all the interstate routes with their corresponding state route numbers revealed.

State Highway and US Route System

In addition to functional classification, this map series reflects the current State Highway and US Route System designations on Georgia’s public road system.

State Highway revisions are approved by the Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner.  Major revisions to the US Route Numbering System are approved by the American Association of Transportation Officials (AASHTO).

Note: State Route designations of 740 or higher on these maps are used for administrative purposes only, and do not indicate Department maintenance responsibility nor are they posted on Georgia's State Routes.

This map series provides the most current functional classifications on Georgia’s public road system. These maps are accurate for all road classifications higher than local roads. Roads that are not symbolized or shown on this map series are presently classified as either a rural or urban local road.

Georgia DOT's Office of Transportation Data is responsible for coordinating revisions to the functional classification system. Revisions are initially coordinated with the appropriate local planning agency then approved by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
