Statewide Transportation Plan

Planning Georgia's 25-Year Transportation Future
Since the completion of the 1995 Statewide Transportation Plan, life has changed
in Georgia. Rapid economic growth of the state has worsened traffic congestion and
air quality in the Atlanta metro area and in many cities across the state. Georgia's
rural and small towns face other transportation issues. Many remain isolated from needed
transportation resources and economic growth.
In response to this challenge, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) took
a fresh look at how to best meet the transportation needs of the State for the new
millennium by updating the Statewide Transportation Plan. The update of the Plan,
complete in December 2001, took a very comprehensive look at the transportation issues
facing Georgia now and 25 years in the future. These issues included growth trends,
growth projections, economics, existing conditions and a host of others.
The public outreach for the Plan was one of the most extensive conducted by the Department.
Public meetings were held across the state as were a series of stakeholder meetings that
included topics such as Needs and Concerns of Rural Georgians and Freight Issues.
Newsletters were published on a quarterly basis, a toll-free phone number was available,
the web site was provided, and a survey was published statewide in local newspapers.
We feel confident that at least a million of Georgia’s citizens were given the opportunity
to participate in the development of the Plan and to give input.
This web page provides the technical documentation that went into the development
of the Plan, the public outreach efforts and the final documents.
