Multi-Modal Transportation Study
for Effingham County

  Overview and Purpose of Study

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), in cooperation with Effingham County, has initiated a multi-modal transportation study for the county and the cities of Guyton, Rincon, and Springfield.  The study is made necessary by the expected growth that will take place over the next 25 years.  Population is projected to increase from today’s 47,000 to 80,000 in 2030.  Employment will grow from 8,800 to 24,000 during the same period.  The outcome of the study will be a plan that elected officials and other policy makers can use to guide the transportation decision-making process in the county and the cities over the next 25 years.  The Transportation Plan will be a companion to the recently completed Comprehensive Plan.  Together they will ensure that the growth in the county will be orderly and adequately supported by the transportation infrastructure.  The Transportation Plan is scheduled for completion in April 2008.

  Organization of the Study

The Study is organized into seven tasks as follows:

    1. Data collection
    2. Evaluation of existing conditions
    3. Travel demand modeling
    4. Evaluation of future conditions
    5. Recommended improvements
    6. Examination of environmental conditions
    7. Agency/public involvement

  What's Happening Now

  • Consultant has been selected to conduct the study.
  • Data collection is underway.
  • Kick-off meeting has been held.
  • Public Involvement Plan (PIP) has been drafted.

Why the Study is Important to You

  • The study can help produce a plan that elected officials and other policy makers can use to guide the transportation decision-making process in the county and the cities over the next 25 years.
  • The study will help state and local officials' current effort to identify safety issues.
  • The study will provide strategies to help mitigate congestion.
  • A balanced transportation system can help keep the air clean.
