Special Projects
- Statewide Bicycle and Pedestrian Initiative. GDOT continues to focus on
planning for bicycle and pedestrian facilities in the state of Georgia. Believing that planning for these
types of facilities provides both transportation and air quality benefits, GDOT has embarked on extensive planning
for improved bike and ped facilities throughout the state. These efforts include bicycle route planning and
on-going development of a statewide Pedestrian Plan.
- Scenic Byways are roadways, specially designated by the Georgia
Department of Transportation, that showcase the culture, history, and landscapes our state. While acting as
importatnt transportation corridors, Scenic Byways also serve local communities as a tool for preservation,
tourism and economic development. Essential to Georgia's roadway system, GDOT is pleased to support Scenic
Byways both for their intrinsic qualities and for their transportation value.
- Transportation Enhancements (TE). The Intermodal Surface Transportation
Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA) established the Transportation Enhancement (TE) program and was further refined
under the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) in 1998. The program was established as a
means to enrich the traveling experience of motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians through enhancements to our
transportation system. Federal funding for TE projects is allotted to provide aesthetic and functional
improvements to historical, natural, and scenic areas. SAFETEA-LU states that each project should meet one
of the eligible categories and be related to surface transportation.
- Safe Routes to School. Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a new program
created by the federal transportation bill, SAFETEA-LU. The Program’s goal is to increase the number of
children in grades K-8 bicycling and walking to school. Benefits of the Program include: reduced congestion
and increased safety near participating schools, reduced air pollution in route to and near participating schools,
and increased physical activity of children.
