Savannah Harbor Information
The Georgia Department
of Transportation became the local sponsor for the Savannah Harbor on December
8, 1999.
As local sponsor, GDOT
is responsible for:
The
Savannah Harbor currently extends from the mouth of the Savannah River to
approximately 21 miles inland. In addition, the channel extends into the offshore
sand bar approximately 11 miles. In the sand bar, the authorized project depth
is -44 feet at low tide with a channel width of 600 feet. The authorized depth
of the inland portions of the project is generally -42 feet at low tide with
a channel width varying from 200 to 500 feet. There is currently a project
under way to increase the authorized depth of the inland portion of the channel
to a maximum of -48 feet at low tide and the sand bar to -50 feet at low tide.
There are currently 9
upland and 1 offshore disposal areas in use in the Savannah Harbor. In general,
the dredged material from the inland channel is deposited in the upland disposal
areas on a rotational basis and the dredged material from the bar channel
is deposited in the offshore disposal area. As the upland areas become full,
their dikes are raised to provide additional capacity. The following table
outlines the disposal area information for the Savannah Harbor:
