Brunswick Harbor Information


The Georgia Department of Transportation became the local sponsor for the Brunswick Harbor on April 5, 2002.

As local sponsor, GDOT is responsible for:

    • Providing easements and rights-of-way for upland disposal areas
    • Providing 35% of the cost required to raise the dikes at Andrews Island, which is the main upland disposal area in the Brunswick Harbor.

The Brunswick Harbor currently extends from the mouth of the Brunswick River to approximately 11.5 miles inland on the Turtle River. In addition, the channel extends up the South Brunswick River approximately 1.2 miles, up the East River approximately 1.7 miles, and into the offshore sand bar approximately 9 miles. In the sand bar, the authorized project depth is -38 feet at low tide with a channel width of 500 feet. The authorized depth of the inland portions of the project is -36 feet at low tide with a channel width varying from 300 to 400 feet.

The Andrews Island disposal area is approximately 770 acres with 25,500 lineal feet of dikes, which are currently 35 feet above low tide.
