Each volunteer group adopts at least a one-mile stretch of highway and agrees to remove litter from both sides of the road at least four times a year for a two-year period. A group which wants to pay for a litter removal service adopts at least a two-mile stretch of highway for two years.
The volunteer group’s leader notifies the appropriate Georgia DOT office at least three business days prior to a scheduled pickup. The filled litter bags are left on the site at a predetermined location for Georgia DOT crews to pick up. Within one week after the pickup, the volunteer group will submit a status report to the district office.
A volunteer group may also participate in the following additional activities:
Contribute wildflower seeds to be planted in your adopted site, per the discretion of the District.
Develop and implement a program to educate the public and help foster public awareness about litter prevention and improve the appearance of the adopted highway.
Remove graffiti, per the discretion of the District.
Pay contract services to remove litter from your adopted site, per the discretion of the District.
