Division of Operations

The mission of this Division is to ensure a safe and efficient transportation system for its users. This includes operational features, addressing maintenance needs, and regulating and monitoring the proper use of Georgia highway facilities.

Office of Traffic Safety and Design Office of Traffic Operations

The Office of Traffic Safety and Design is responsible for the following:

  • Traffic engineering policies statewide
  • Traffic signal permits on state routes
  • Programming, concept and design of operational projects
  • Design of traffic signals, signs, pavement markings and intelligent transportation systems
  • Approval and design of supplemental signs on interstate highways
  • Administration of the LOGO Sign Program
  • Management of Statewide Railroad Safety Program
  • Management of Right of Way Access Program (commercial driveway and other encroachment permits)
  • Safety Management System & vehicle crash analysis
  • Intelligent Transportation System (NaviGAtor) statewide program
    • State Operations Center / Incident Management
    • Freeway management systems / Transportation Management Center
    • Traffic signal/arterial management systems
    • Commercial Vehicle Operations
  • Highway Emergency Response Operators (HEROs) Program
  • Traffic Signal Electrical Facilities (TSEF)
    • Statewide signal equipment repair
    • Statewide signal equipment warehouse
    • Emergency signal installations
    • Signal systems timing team
    • Statewide signal software/hardware specifications
Maintenance Office of Utilities
  • Responsible for the permitting of utilities within the right of way and for coordinating utility relocations for construction projects
  • Responsible for coordinating work around and near railroad crossings on construction projects and permitting new railroad crossings
  • Guidance is provided to all Department offices and Districts relating to railroad and utility encroachments, adjustments, relocations, agreements and billings
Oversized Permit Unit
  • Issue permits for those vehicles which may exceed the legal weight and size as established by State & Federal Laws.
