Bituminous Construction Branch

The Bituminous Construction Branch supervises the design of asphaltic concrete mixtures, certifies and inspects bituminous materials, and provides Technical Services to hot mix asphalt and other bituminous construction projects statewide. Design, testing and certification activities are conducted in the Central Laboratory (Metro Atlanta) and six Branch Laboratories located throughout the state. The Field Data Collection System (FDCS) is available online.

Concrete Branch

The Concrete Branch is made up of the Prestress/Precast Concrete Unit and the Concrete Technical Services Unit. The Prestress/Precast Concrete Unit monitors and inspects the manufacture and placement of a variety of items including concrete beams, pilings and poles. The Technical Services Unit monitors the production and placement of concrete mixtures statewide.

Pit and Quarry Branch

The Pit and Quarry Branch monitors the quality control and aggregate certification programs statewide and provides technical services at both the quarry site and on construction projects. This branch also reviews requests for approval and easements for both soil borrow pits and common fill sites. Technical services are also provided for the production and placement of Graded Aggregate and Soil Cement bases.

Inspection Services Branch

The Inspection Services Branch performs pre-inspections of materials used in the construction of bridges and various roadway items. The Structural Steel Unit is responsible for shop and field inspection of structural steel for highway bridges, the evaluation of materials and fabrication of structural supports for overhead signs, steel high mast poles, steel and aluminum lighting poles, illuminated sign systems, and other highway items requiring welds. The General Inspection Unit is responsible for the inspection, testing and evaluation of miscellaneous highway materials including, reinforcement steel, gray iron castings, guardrail, highway signs, paints, treated wood products, and fence materials. General Inspection Unit personnel also manage GDOT's Concrete Pipe, Concrete Precast, Plastic Pipe, and Metal Pipe programs.
