Geotechnical/Environmental Bureau


Bureau Chief: Thomas Scruggs


The Geotechnical/Environmental Bureau provides geotechnical engineering services to all offices of GDOT statewide. It is made up of:

Engineering Branch
and the Environmental Branch

Preliminary Engineering Branch

The Preliminary Engineering Branch consists of the Subsurface Exploration Unit, comprising four drill crews. They provide the information needed by various offices to complete special engineering and construction tasks.

Branch Chief: Sidney Johnson


Engineering Branch

The Engineering Branch includes an engineering staff of seven graduate engineers and support staff. They provide recommendations which assist various offices in design, construction, maintenance, and emergency repairs of bridges, roadways, retaining walls, and dikes. They also provide assistance with special problems such as landslides and sinkholes.

Environmental Branch

The Environmental Branch provides recommendations on hazardous waste issues to right of way offices, maintenance offices and various other offices. The branch is composed of a subsurface exploration unit and the environmental engineers.
