Transportation Enhancement Activities in Georgia
6. McQueen's Island
Bicycle & Pedestrian Trail

The McQueens Island Multipurpose Trail is located near Fort Pulaski National Monument and runs adjacent to the Savannah river and US 80. The trail is built upon the abandoned railroad bed of the former Savannah-Tybee Island Railroad, and is approximately six miles long. The trail provides for activities such as hiking, jogging, sightseeing, and bicycling. To enhance its user-friendliness, interpretive signing has been put in place.

The trail is 9 feet wide throughout, and its surface is comprised of crushed calcite stone. The calcite stone surface was specifically selcted to benefit the local turtles: prior to the project's construction, the turtles would have to cross US 80 to find calcium to aid their digestion. Since the trail was created with the calcium the turtles seek, they simply munch on the trail, instead of crossing US 80.
