Transportation Enhancement Activities in Georgia
3. Douglas Steetscape

The Douglas streetscape project was completed in 1995. The city's project enhanced the historic downtown district and the quality of the transportation by constructing a pedestrian-welcoming streetscape. The streetscape includes special brickwork, lighting, benches, planters, trees and shrubs, gazebos, and wheelchair ramps.

An inviting environment has been created for both the citizens of Douglas and its visitors. Downtown Douglas has used its historic architecture to attract people and stimulate economic growth. Pedestrian streetscape courts have been placed at numerous intersections and at mid-block. Most notably, benches have been placed next to large trees and small flower plantings near the courthouse: Douglas is the county seat of Coffee County, and the tree-shaded benches provide much appreciated leisure for Coffee County citizens who have business at the county courts.

The TEA project has helped stimulate business activity and revitalization in downtown Douglas. Prior to the construction of the TEA project, Douglas had a 25 percent vacancy rate of businesses. Currently, Douglas enjoys a much lower (10 percent) business vacancy rate. City officials have attributed much of this lower business vacancy rate to the streetscape project.
